Gruml 0.9.21: Bereit zum Test

Veröffentlicht am Sonntag, 15. August 2010 von in Blog

Since the last release of Gruml I’ve completely rewritten the backend of Gruml; the local storage of your articles and feeds and the synchronization with Google Reader are performed in a different way now.

What does that mean in detail?

  • If you first launch Gruml it will fetch an initial data pool from Google Reader; after that, articles and changes to your subscriptions will be fetched incremental – the download consumption will be reduced compared to older versions of Gruml.
  • The local database of Gruml has been rewritten as well; navigation through your feeds and articles will be snappier and offline use of Gruml has been improved.

As these are major changes, some more testing needs to be done before Gruml 0.9.21 will be released via auto-update and as main download.
Feel free to test this initial preview release of Gruml 0.9.21 and give some feedback via e-mail or blog comment if you like.

Gruml 0.9.21 has been released; please download the release version instead.

Please notice:

  • If you start Gruml 0.9.21 for the first time, an inital sync with Google Reader will be performed (even if you have used an older version of Gruml before); depending on the number of your subscriptions this may take some time.
  • The sync interval can be set in “Preferences”-”Advanced”.

Fanastic update so far in testing. Far better performance, and Gruml no longer prevents my Macbook from sleeping. Thanks!

Awesome upgrade! Performance (sync and article browsing) has improved A LOT! Well done!

    Few requests:

1-> Use J as ‘Next Unread Item’ instead of ‘Select Next Item’.
2-> Use J and K to automatically sort through feeds and folders. Right now, you have to manually sort through feeds and folders using arrow keys.
3-> While browsing through articles-list (the middle column in the 3-column view), the number of ‘unread articles’ icon (next to the feed name) is a bit slow (few milliseconds?) to sync according to my speed of browsing the articles-list.

That’s it! Once again, very good upgrade!

Great update. I do have a gripe about keyboard navigation, though: the spacebar selects the next unread item, but only if the folder it’s in is expanded. If it’s not expanded, the folder is selected, but not the item. I have to manually open each folder with unread items to select them.

Also, when a folder is selected on the left hand side, I can’t find a way to get over to the articles pane with the keyboard — tab is used to rename the folder, which doesn’t seem that useful. I can click with the mouse, but I prefer using the keyboard to navigate.

Finally, a quick plug for my hierarchical folders request:

    Otherwise, this release looks great.
